Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee - Muhammad Ali
Boxing legend Muhammad Ali recently passed away on June 3, 2016 after having been in the ring with Parkinson's disease for more than 30 years.
It came as a surprise to many that his official cause of death, according to family spokesman Bob Gunnell, was "septic shock due to unspecified natural causes." According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Sepsis is the body's overwhelming and life-threatening response to an infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure and death." As explained by Dr. Michael S. Okun, national medical director of the National Parkinson Foundation, there are aspects of Parkinson's disease that, in it's later stages, may aid in the developing of infections in the bloodstream. Thus leading to sepsis. Currently there is NO cure for Parkinson's disease. There are only medications to help control the symptoms. However, controlling symptoms is not eradicating the disease. Awareness and efforts to cure Parkinson's disease must be promoted in order to prevent future generations from suffering. |
